Gregors Creek Retreat

When we first met our clients, they had expressed to us their visions of escaping country life, and creating an authentic country retreat which they could share with family and friends throughout their early retirement years.

The land they had chosen to use as the basis for the property contained some historic buildings still onsite – which gave us an interesting canvas to use as inspiration for the Queenslander/Hamptons hybrid design!

With picture perfect countryside vistas on a well-situated acreage block, the property offered the unique opportunity for a new home to link with the existing old school house, the old bakery, and a historic cottage.

Design Concept

These older buildings were destined to be transformed into guest wing accommodation for extended family, with the new central home providing a communal kitchen and family gathering domain for all to enjoy.

The new residence was designed to extend the warmth of the older buildings, while simultaneously celebrating the very best of modern conveniences. With north-east views, the home avoids looking out over neighbours and instead enjoys the natural surrounds of green paddocks and rolling hills!

The original brief for this design was to create an open Hamptons style home, while incorporating the existing, older buildings that were already on the property. The clients wanted an authentic country retreat to share with friends and family, that enjoys the natural surrounding of green paddocks and rolling hills.

For those not located within Queensland, the issue with a traditional Hampton’s style home in Queensland is that, without altering the general construction style and material choices, they can be fairly unlivable in our subtropical climate!

Design Features

The key to making Hampton’s homes work in our climate is to keep the core design features the same, while simultaneously making them more climate responsive by taking design elements from other homes, such as Queenslanders.
